Recycling Clothing For Charity
Nobody could have predicted what was to come after we first heard about cases of coronavirus in China in early 2020. All subsequent lockdowns and social restrictions that the UK as a whole had to undergo meant that our charities have suffered with all fundraising efforts by staff and supporters grinding to a complete halt.
But with the creativity and continued support there has been a glimmer of hope as people started running marathons up and down our stairs at home rather than in the streets of our big cities, we’ve been shaving our heads and cycling around the world on stationary bikes as well as donating textiles into our Recycled Clothing Banks bins across the region. We’ve also been donating 2000% more to NHS causes and 3000% more to food banks for people who really are struggling.
All of our charities now need us to rally round – big and small, the NHS and food banks have been well supported but let’s not forget other causes that need help as well. Did you know that in April 2020, the top 50 charities lost 93% of their income compared to the year before, with the charity sector as a whole losing 44%.
Many cancer charities that research new treatments and offer emotional support to families going through difficult times, lost 87% of their fundraising. Mental health charities lost 85% of their fundraising support meaning that lifelines for people struggling with depression and anxiety were thin on the ground.
Vital children’s charities that help to safeguard and nurture young lives lost 79% of their income. These are only a few examples.
A survey by the Neighbourly community investment platform showed that demand for support from small local charities had doubled. In response, says Neighbourly’s chief executive, Steve Butterworth, most charities have remodelled their services. “They’ve realised they can’t wait for external help,” he says. The charities have had to adapt just as businesses have had to do in order to survive and now it’s time we doubled our efforts to raise money for charities in the UK.
The team at Recycled Clothing Banks haven’t stopped working during the crisis and we have helped hundreds of organisations continue to raise funds for their vital services and good causes. How? We have installed our branded recycled clothing bins on their premises and they’ve encouraged the local community to donate pre-loved clothes, paired shoes and household textiles for which we pay them a cash sum direct.
We are really pleased to announce that the market price has gone up so we are now in a position to pay more per kilo for donations rising from 30p per kilo to 40p per kilo – so that is a staggering £400 per tonne you can earn just by collecting unwanted garments and household textiles.
