How you can help our homeless community during the winter

It may well be May now and relatively summery outside, but it won’t be long before the colder months are back and these come around all too soon for the homeless people on our streets.

You may be wondering why we are writing a blog so early about winter but this is the perfect time for you to start thinking about your winter wardrobe and whether or not you really need to keep as much of your warmer clothing as you think. If you are swapping over your winter and summer wardrobe and feel there are items that you no longer need, please donate them, don’t bin them! Here at Recycled Clothing Banks, we work closely with HandsOn London, our charity partner, who look after our homeless community year after year and who do a tireless and amazing job.

We are always happy to collect donations, completely free of charge, of warm clothing, blankets and sleeping bags to help someone in need. During the winter, temperatures can be extremely low, especially at night. Your clothing donations of jackets, coats, gloves, hats, and socks as well as blankets and sleeping bags are essential.

There are several other ways you can help the homeless in the winter:

Provide food and water: Homeless individuals may struggle to find warm, nutritious meals and clean water during the winter. Consider donating non-perishable food items such as canned goods, protein bars, and bottled water to homeless shelters. You can also donate to local food banks, which often provide meals to those in need.

Volunteer your time: Homeless shelters and outreach organisations that serve the homeless often need volunteers to help with various tasks. You can volunteer your time to help serve meals, distribute clothing and blankets, or even offer a friendly conversation to someone who may be feeling lonely and isolated.

Donate money: If you are unable to donate items or your time, consider donating money to organisations that provide services and resources to the homeless. Your donation can help provide warm meals, shelter, and other necessities to those in need.

Raise awareness: Use your voice to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness and the challenges faced by those who are homeless during the winter months. Share information about local organisations that are working to address the issue and encourage others to get involved in helping the homeless community.
