local clothes bank

Where is my local clothes bank?

Is it time to make way for Christmas by having a pre-festive clear out?

There are some shocking facts about the clothing habits of Londoners including:

  • The average Londoner owns 76 pieces of clothing
  • 18 of these are never worn – usually because they don’t fit
  • This equates to 333,000 tonnes of CO2 which could power around 50,000 homes each year

With only ‘3 and a bit months’ until Christmas, we need to recognise that this is a period of hyper consumption in more ways than one. Not only do we mass shop, usually for unwanted and ill-received gifts that end up in landfill, but we waste considerable amounts of food when people are literally queuing at the food banks. Our poorly planet can’t take much more of the waste created by commercial shopping days such as Black Friday, Halloween, Valentine’s Day and Easter. This all contributes towards the ecological breakdown of our environment and harmful emissions.

The UK is projected to spend £87 billion on Christmas! That’s 100 million bin bags full of packaging alone.  How many of us have the ‘worn only once’ Christmas jumper, Santa hat, festive dress, Santa onesie not to mention the festive boxers and socks? Don’t put them into landfill – put them into your local clothes bank and let them have another lease of life the following Christmas (ok, maybe not the undies!). Only 2 out of 5 jumpers are ever worn more than once.

But donating your unwanted textiles is one of the biggest environment actions you can take to keep garments out of landfill sites. You simply have to Google ‘Where is my local clothes bank?’ to find a local recycling centre that will happily take your clothing donations.

Alternatively, you can work with us here at Recycled Clothing Banks and get paid for your textiles donations. All you have to do is have one of our FREE branded recycled clothing bins installed in your commercial premises or local authority land and we will pay you a whopping £400 per tonne for reusable clothing, household textiles and paired shoes. We are still looking to partner with more local councils, hospitality outlets, places of worship, national and local charities, retail parks, health clubs and commercial businesses in the hope to raise more support for local communities and their projects that need additional funds.

We’ve been working in textiles recycling for over a decade alongside our customers who are passionate about raising awareness and funds for their community. We also work with charities such as HandsOn London, keeping the homeless warm over the winter months.

We are here to help keep your money growing and to support your charity or projects by paying by the tonne, so, the more you collect, the more we pay when you fill your clothes bank. So next time you have a clothing clear out and are searching for a local clothes bank, remember that Recycled Clothing Banks can help you to earn money for your essential donations.
