TRAID, the textile recycling charity has revealed the incredible results one year on from the creation of its 23 per cent campaign. The campaign itself was aptly named after a shocking discovery that most Londoners have 23% of their wardrobe filled with clothing that has never been worn and still have shop labels attached. TRAID has since collected a staggering one million garments – in a single year — from clothing consumers across London.
Recycle now: what to do with your old clothes
They have achieved this by collecting as many garments as possible via home collections, clothing bins, textiles recycling banks and charity shops. This amounts to 258 tonnes of clothing, which to charity say has registered carbon and water savings of almost 2,451 and 412 tonnes respectively. It is forecast that global consumption of clothes is projected to rise by 63% to 102 million tonnes by 2030. With those figures being shared, it is now critical that we need to reduce our textiles consumption to save our planet. It is certainly time to get rid of what we don’t need, reuse and recycle and start living better lives with less.
Here at Recycled Clothing Banks, we can help Londoners and citizens across the south east of England to make this positive change and it is a simple, hassle-free process.
