How can you support our homeless community this winter?

We are already in the month of May, with sunshine and warmer days ahead, but winter has a way of arriving faster than we expect. For people experiencing homelessness, the colder months can be especially harsh, bringing freezing nights, difficult conditions, and an even greater need for support.
So why talk about winter now? Because this is the perfect time to prepare.

As many of us pack away coats, jumpers, and winter accessories, it’s also the ideal moment to take stock of what we no longer need. If you have warm clothing sitting unused in your wardrobe, please consider donating it rather than throwing it away.

At Recycled Clothing Banks, we proudly work alongside HandsOn London, our charity partner, who tirelessly support vulnerable people in our homeless community year after year.

We are always happy to collect donations free of charge, including:

  • Warm coats and jackets
  • Jumpers and hoodies
  • Gloves, hats, and scarves
  • Socks and thermal clothing
  • Blankets
  • Sleeping bags

These items can make a life-changing difference during freezing winter nights.

Other ways you can help this winter and support our homeless community this winter

Provide food and water
Access to hot meals, nutritious food, and clean drinking water can be difficult during winter. You can help by donating non-perishable food such as canned goods, protein bars, and bottled water to local shelters or food banks.

Volunteer your time
Homeless shelters and outreach organisations often rely on volunteers. Whether it’s serving meals, sorting donations, distributing essentials, or simply offering conversation and kindness, your time can have a huge impact.

Donate money
If you’re unable to donate items or volunteer, financial donations are always valuable. They help charities provide emergency accommodation, warm meals, clothing, and ongoing support services.

Raise awareness
Homelessness affects communities all year round, but winter can be especially dangerous. By sharing information, supporting local charities, and encouraging others to get involved, you can help create real change.
