It’s competition time for not one, but TWO winners!
Here at Recycled Clothing Banks we have just launched a competition through our sister company Kids Just Recycle which offers Schools, PTAs or Scout/Guide Groups the opportunity to win £250 and learn about the danger of landfill use.
We are giving kids across the country the chance to get creative with their upcycling ideas and win a CASH prize which can be donated to any educational setting or club (not an individual). Just a take a look at these items produced in Africa – funky flip flops made of old rubber car tyres and marvellous mats made from old plastic bags; it’s amazing what you can upcycle to keep it out of landfill!
REDUCE LANDFILL

Landfill is becoming a big problem in the UK and we are fast running out of space; here at Recycled Clothing Banks, we are doing everything we can to keep as much textile waste out of it and for it to be recycled, repurposed and reused.
Did you know that there are over 500 landfill sites in the UK – but most of us don’t even know where they are!
The largest one has now closed after reaching capacity and could be found just outside Birmingham – The Packington Landfill site at 380 acres. Rather than a ‘landfill’ it was technically a ‘land raise’, forming a hideous towering hill of waste in the UK landscape, rather than being hidden underground. The site was in operation for 50 years and held a massive 35 million tonnes of waste.
In the UK, we are now rapidly approaching a time where we will have nowhere to store non-hazardous waste as more and more sites fill up.
By contrast, the largest landfill site in the world is the Apex Regional, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA which is a huge 2,200 acres. Daily it takes 9,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste, though it has the capacity to take a staggering 15,000 tonnes. This particular landfill spot was opened in 1993 by Republic Services and has a projected life of 250 years – at which point it will have amassed a whopping 50 million tonnes of waste. All of the Methane gas from the landfill site has been regenerated into an 11-Megawatt power plant that provides energy to over 10,000 households in Southern Nevada. The power plant cost $35million to build but is money well spent as landfill gas accounts for 17.7 percent of all America’s methane emissions. These plants are essential in reducing greenhouse gases from our environment and we need to do more in the UK.
We want to raise awareness of these landfill issues and that’s why we came up with a competition idea that will get kids thinking and encourage them to come up with a super smart and cleverly creative upcycled product, and send in their photos to our email address by Friday 16th of July 2021. Our TWO lucky winners will be announced for the new school year on Friday 10th September 2021.
If you know someone who would like to enter, they will need to send their entries to enquiries@kidsjustrecycle.co.uk by 16th July 2021.
