What are the true benefits of clothes bank London?
A recent study carried out by clothing reuse charity ‘TRAID’ (Textile Reuse and International Development has shown that almost a quarter of people (23%) living in London have the equivalent to 123 million clothing items unworn and lurking in their wardrobes.
As part of the Sustainable Development Goals, TRAID have launched their 23% Clothing Campaign in the hope that Londoners will now start to recycle their unworn clothing items.
Who can benefit from clothes bank London
Did you know?
- The average Londoner owns 76 pieces of clothing
- 18 of these are never worn – usually because they don’t fit
- This equates to 333,000 tonnes of CO2 which could power around 50,000 homes each year
A separate independent study of 2,000 participants was carried out UK-wide and whilst we would assume that millennials are the driving force in recycling, many under 25s are throwing out clothing due to minor faults just as a missing button or loose stitching. This study looked into how easily people of different ages throw away clothing and home textiles during the wear and tear process.
Rather than donating to charity, 43% said they would send the offending item of clothing off to landfill!
