About

Description
Save the Mothers Trust has been placing clothing collection bins in Manchester for many years. During that time, we have encountered numerous bins that, to the best of our knowledge, were positioned without the necessary permissions from local councils or private landowners.
The organisation’s original clothing banks were blue in colour, although more recent collections appear to use orange bins. In recent years, their operations seem to have expanded beyond Manchester, with bins also appearing in and around Leeds.
While the organisation states that it is a charity supporting projects overseas, concerns remain regarding whether all of its collection banks have the appropriate permissions required for their locations. In our experience, some bins have been placed on land without the consent of the relevant authority or landowner, creating issues for property owners and local communities.
Over the years, we have been involved in the removal of a number of clothing banks where no valid permission could be established. This has often required landowners and local authorities to take action to have the bins removed from their sites.
We believe that all organisations operating clothing collection banks, whether charitable or commercial, should obtain the proper permissions before placing equipment on public or private land. Transparency, compliance with local regulations, and respect for landowners are essential to maintaining public trust and ensuring that charitable giving is carried out responsibly.
Anyone considering hosting a clothing bank should ensure that the operator can provide evidence of permission, explain how the donated clothing will be used, and demonstrate who ultimately benefits from the collections.
